James Murray summons the imagination. His Islands Alight (47:28) re-interprets the Ambient Music form over a series of eight distinctive Electronic realizations. Striking in their originality and continuity of vision, this release frees itself from the confines of the present - to give us something passionate and eternal. Approaching Islands Alight with curiosity and awareness, an informed audience encounters lost works of unsettling remoteness, then ascends in tracks excited by flowing rhythm and the danger of discovery. As soft grooving brings a sultry sensibility to the cerebral atmospheres, comforting pads, breathing tones and a guiding, propulsive pulse offer a unique transient intimacy. Energetic, due less to its beat treats than the frequent harmonic shifts and bright recurring themes, Islands Alight riffs with an impression of cloudy ethereality. Emphasizing a gulf of imagined space between some distant landscape and the narrative confronting the listener, Murray cools us to safe levels - while navigating the vast silent space and solitude of the mind.
